Scale Up – Masterclass One

During my ‘scale up’ project, I will also be doing three miniature masterclasses so I can learn a number of new craft skills.  My first masterclass was to make an arched button shape from blue foam – that was designed on CAD – using the processes of profiling, filling, sanding and spraying.

To profile this object, I printed fourteen of the design’s vertical cross sections out onto paper, meaning I could stick each of the prints to the foam and cut each individual cross section out on the band saw.  I then lined up the cut out shapes in order and glued them together, leaving the design to dry in a clamp for two hours.

In the next stage of this masterclass I will be filling the object to give the design it’s smooth surface.
