Jason deCaires Taylor’s, ‘Silent Evolution’

Artist, Jason deCaires Taylor, has created a coral reef of statues he calls the ‘Silent Evolution,’ just off the coast of Cancun in Mexico.  His creation is made up from a collection of four hundred life size human sculptures which are installed nine metres below sea level.  The piece conveys a relationship between man and nature whilst embodying both sadness and awe.

Artificial reefs are a durable, environmentally friendly alternative to coral reefs offering them time to regenerate.  The life size human sculptures are made from a pH neutral concrete, reinforced with fibreglass, which surprisingly, attracts marine life encouraging it to grow and regenerate.

The piece conveys a relationship between man and nature whilst embodying both sadness and awe.  It shows our close relationship and reliance on nature.

Taylor rescues coral that is damaged in storms and by humans, replanting them on his sculptures.  His use of human statues is quite symbolic, it shows how humans are creating the destruction of reefs but also conveys hope, humans are capable of fixing the problem.

I find this piece unbelievably eerie – I think it looks like a statues graveyard, in a non-creepy way, if that is at all possible…

  1. Excellent read, I just passed this onto a friend who was doing a little research on that. And he just bought me lunch because I found it for him smile Thus let me rephrase that: Thank you for lunch!
